Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammaplasty, also restores volume lost after significant weight reduction or deflation after pregnancy, allows for a more rounded breast contour and may also improve symmetry if the breasts are asymmetrical. Breast implants are also an option for breast reconstruction after mastectomy for breast cancer.

PROCEDURE

A breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthesia. A single incision, in the fold underneath the breast (inframammary fold), is made for a breast augmentation without a breast-lift. This incisions is made in an inconspicuous area to reduce visible scarring. After the incision is made, a pocket for the breast implant is created either behind the pectoral muscle or directly behind the breast tissue. The pocket choice depends on the implant type, degree of enlargement desired, your body type and Dr Sofianos's recommendations. Incisions are closed in layers and surgical tape is placed over the incision. Dr Sofianos does not usually insert drainage tubes for simple breast augmentation.

RECOVERY

You will wake up with a supportive postoperative bra that will need to be worn continuously for the first few weeks postoperatively. Dr Sofianos will prescribe pain medication to make your recovery more comfortable.

Most individuals return to work within a week after the procedure. Strenuous activity or exercise should however be attempted only after 4 weeks.

Over time, swelling will resolve and incision lines will begin to fade.
